Dinner at the hut
About this pouch
Diced beef braised until it pulls apart, in a deep red sauce of sweet paprika, caraway, marjoram, black pepper, onion and red pepper, with chunks of potato. It's goulash the way a German kitchen makes it, with potato rather than spätzle, because potato comes through drying whole and egg noodles turn to paste. After a long climb, when the hut is cold and your legs are done, it's the dinner that feels like a reward. It's cooked first, then freeze-dried whole, and the potato comes back soft right through. Pour the water straight into the pouch, close it for 8 minutes and eat it where you sit.

Questions about this pouch
- Is it spicy?
- No. Sweet paprika and caraway give it warmth without heat; black pepper is the only bite.
- Why potato and not noodles?
- Potato keeps its shape through freeze-drying and comes back soft. Spätzle and egg noodles go mushy.
- Does it work with cold water?
- Yes, in about 20 minutes, and the time varies. Goulash is best hot, so heat the water if you have a stove.
