Sunday, without the cooking
About this pouch
Every meal-prep Sunday ends with the same tub: chicken, rice, something green. Meal No. 01 is that dish, with peas, carrot and sweetcorn in the rice and olive oil, salt and spices to finish it. It's cooked first, then freeze-dried whole, so the rice comes back as separate grains and the chicken as pieces you'd recognise. Each pouch holds 41 g of protein, and the figure is printed on the front. A batch is packed only when its water activity reads 0.60 or lower, and the lot number on the base leads back to that reading.
Where it fits
Training and desk days
41 g of protein in 430 kcal. Multiply the protein by 4 kcal and 164 of the 430 come from it, which is 38 % against the 20 % the EU asks for before a food may be called high protein. The rest of the pouch is 52 g of carbohydrate (4.5 g sugars), 8 g of fat (1.8 g saturates) and 1.2 g of salt. At €9.90 a pouch that's €0.24 per gram of protein, and €0.22 in the Work Week Pack.
Hill and boat days
110 g in the rucksack at 391 kcal per 100 g dry, so 1,000 kcal of it weighs 256 g. It needs 300 ml of water, at 80–100 °C from a stove or cold from a bottle with no stove at all, and the pouch is the bowl, zipped shut again for the walk out. Rations No. 01 is the same recipe in a 120 g pouch with 469 kcal and 45 g of protein for longer days out.

- No. A kettle is enough, and so is a bottle of cold water. 300 ml goes straight into the pouch: at 80–100 °C it's ready in eight minutes, cold in about 20, depending on the water. You eat from the pouch.

- Yes. 41 g of protein at 4 kcal a gram is 164 of its 430 kcal, or 38 % of the energy. EU rules allow the claim from 20 %.
- How long does an opened pouch keep?
- Use it within 24 hours of opening. Once the water is in, eat it straight away.
